3D cinema interest has escalated in recent years. Driven initially by Real-D®'s disposable glasses system, there are now enough 3D screens for Hollywood to create a 3D movie for each month of the year.
Despite attempts to recover the disposable 3D cinema glasses many of them still end up in landfill - multiply the total losses per screen per performance per theatre per city and the cost in terms of easte is enormous. Some systems, such as those of Dolby® and Xpand®, now offer reusable glasses. This hugely reduces the 'trash' footprint of each cinema and helps to minimise criticism of cinemas producing vast quantities of unnecessary waste.

However, the new 3D cinema glasses from Dolby® & XpandDolby® & Xpand are also more expensive to produce, so their removal from the theatre can easily cost a theatre thousands of dollars over the period of a year, whether in lost glasses or in preventative staffing measures. A poll of non-disposable glasses going missing in early 2009 indicated that the loss rate can run as high as one pair per day. Based on $30 for a pair of Dolby®'s 3D glasses this can therefore cost a theatre as much as $10,000 per year, although this would represent an extreme case.
Enter the DP-3D anti-theft system for 3D cinema glasses from Proyecson®.
The DP-3D anti-theft system is designed to help protect each movie theatre's valuable investment in 3D glasses. By adding a RF tag to the 3D glasses and the DP-3D detection system to each doorway it is more difficult for the glasses to leave the auditorium undetected.
Therefore by combining the DP-3D system with the 3D glasses from either Dolby® or Xpand® it is easier for a theatre to be green while staying in the black.
The DP-3D system is designed to cover maximum area, reaching nearly 6' off the ground, helping to catch those glasses that are still being worn on top of the head as a patron leaves the theatre. Each unit has the capacity to hold 2 large advertising panels - promote concessions, movies or just remind customers that the glasses are reusable to help the environment and encourage all patrons to please return glasses after the performance. Finally, with a reliable cinema-specific anti-theft deterrent in place it is possible to reduce the number of ushers required at each exit, reducing staffing costs.

The 3D anti-theft system can be set up in 'Array Mode' to cover multiple exits
